CHICAGO – Matt Carpenter hit three homers and two doubles in just six innings, equaling the major league record for extra-low shots in a game, and the Cardinals St. Louis hammered the Chicago Cubs 18-5 on Friday.
Carpenter went 5 for 5 and drove in seven points to Wrigley Field. He led the game with a home run and was fired after adding a three-point drive in the sixth.
Carpenter became the 14th player with five additional base moves in a game, and the first to do it for the Cardinals.
Pulling from behind 15 to 1 after Carpenter's third circuit, the Cubs used three players to put the rest of the field: infielder Tommy La Stella, alternate receiver Victor Caratini and the versatile Ian Happ. The Stella and Caratini give up the circuits as the Cubs become the first team since the 1979 Milwaukee Brewers to use three-position players on the mound in a game.

Carpenter joined Cubs star Kris Bryant as the only major players to hit three home runs and two doubles in a game. Bryant also played in this match, as did teammate Willson Contreras.
