St. Louis Cardinals' right-hander Daniel Poncedeleon launched seven smooth starts in his MLB debut Monday night against the Cincinnati Reds.
Poncedeleon threw 116 shots scoring three and three goals, but was removed from the game after the seventh. Phillip Ervin, the Reds' hitting striker, broke out of St. Louis reliever Jordan Hicks, scoring a point in the eighth inning, putting an end to the non-hitter. Cincinnati used a rally twice in the ninth to beat the Cardinals 2-1, giving Poncedeleon a no-decision.
According to research from Elias Sports Bureau, Poncedeleon is the fifth launcher to carry an unsuccessful bid in seven rounds in his MLB debut in the era of expansion (since 1961).
The 26-year-old man was making his first major league start more than a year after taking a line of conduct to his right in a Triple-A match. Poncedeleon undergoes brain surgery following the May 2017 incident, but in February, he had progressed so much that St. Louis invited him to his spring training camp of the Great League
"I do not know if words can describe that magic," said Mike Shildt, director of the Cardinals. "What he faced, what he came back to, making his debut in the MLB, launching seven innings without giving up a shot – that's what's magical in this game and stories like this- there are specials. "
-In Memphis this season, Poncedeleon is 9-3 with a 2.15 ERA and 103 strikeouts in 92 innings. He has won his last four starts, including a blow in his last game on July 15, the first full shutout of his five minor league seasons.
He was recalled last month, but the Cardinals returned him after three games where he did not see the action.
