2 March 2018: a baby, who was supposed to be born in this month of July, was born in Modena severely premature, at the 23rd week of gestation, only 600 grams of weight, affected by a severe form of ROP, retinopathy of Pretermine, a pathology that can lead to blindness.
Despite a rapid treatment by cryotherapy, performed at the hospital in Modena, the pathology unfortunately evolves negatively and causes in the child a bilateral detachment of the retina, at very high risk of loss of vision.
July 2, 2018 : exactly 4 months after birth, the small, now weighing 1800 grams, is operated in Turin, at the High Specialization Center for ROP, regional and national reference, led by Dr. Giovanni Anselmetti, director of the hospital Maria Vittoria Ophthalmology, where he was transferred by ambulance from Modena.

The "ROP" that affects premature births (thus are considered children born before the end of the 37th week of pregnancy, even if the real problem is that of pups below the 28th / 29th gestational week) the complete development of the retinal vessels at the time of birth and, often, also abnormal development, in the first weeks of life, leading to the formation of scar tissue that can cause retinal detachment and lead to the blindness.
