Georgia No. 7 survived Florida No. 9 36-17 on Saturday afternoon in a match that gave Georgia another year of victory, a win in its battle against SEC East and a hope for the race at College Football Playoff after its fall against LSU two weeks since. While Kentucky, number 12, shocks Missouri for an untimed touchdown and wins with a win, UGA will take the solo lead in the SEC East if he can defeat the UK next week .
What did we learn from Georgia's great victory in one of the most ferocious rivalries of college football?
1. Fromm can bounce: Fromm's miserable performance on the road two weeks ago was his first bad match in red and black. He showed Saturday afternoon that his troubles against the Tigers were an anomaly and not the beginning of a trend. His third-quarter touchdown pbad to Jeremiah Holloman to take the lead at 20-14 was the same back shoulder as he had been successful with his late-season SEC run. He then netted points on Terry Godwin for a 24-yard touchdown that crowned a nine-game drive that essentially lost the game.
His three touchdown pbades were on the third try, as were the other two Georgia scores. Fromm was at his post and his team followed suit. It's the Fromm that almost won the national title last year. It was Fromm who was not intimidated by anything despite being pushed into action in the first quarter of his first match as a real freshman. It was Fromm who had some heat on their backs during the break in the form of real double-threat quarterback Justin Fields. He does not care. He does the work. He did it when Georgia needed it most against the Gators.
2. Franks is improving, but it is not there yet: The sophomore-caller redshirt for the Gators was defeated during his year and a half as a starter, and the same nickname can be used to describe his performance on Saturday. He missed some huge shots in the first half – one on a flick-flicker knocked down on the first scrimmage game and another on a post in the second quarter that was almost eliminated. He did not panic and hit Freddie Swain during a 36-yard touchdown on the same course after the first half-time training.
That's what Franks is for the moment. He improved on his redshirt debut season, which was complicated by the mess created by former coach Jim McElwain. The former Franks coach saw potential, and the progression was slow for a player who was to be brutally from Crawfordville, Florida. New coach Dan Mullen is still working with Franks and progress has been made. Not enough to make Florida a contender this year, but hope this could happen next year and beyond.
3. The Eastern SEC is brightened up … in a way: Florida's direct defeats against Georgia and Kentucky – the two contenders for the division – will be hard to beat, but the race for division became evident after both teams found themselves in the locker room. Georgia's win sets up a huge division fight next week against Kentucky in Lexington, Kentucky. The Wildcats defeated Missouri at the end of the game to keep them at the top of the Eastern SEC.
It's hard to believe that Kentucky vs. Georgia will be the game that will decide the SEC East race, but that's exactly what we will do. Georgia's victory over Florida has set up one of the biggest matches in Kentucky's football history. Georgia proved it could go out of the game for a big game against the Gators, but it could not let the winners of the rivalry turn into a bluegrbad hangover.
4. Fields will have to make a decision: The rumor surrounding Georgia after the defeat against LSU two weeks ago was not "if" Fields was going to see more gaming time under the center, but "when". Coach Kirby Smart has made it clear by trusting Fromm to take all the action against the Gators and his post-game commentary congratulating his sophomore by noting that he's in trouble. 39 was acting from Fromm's team from now on. So what does that mean for Fields?
His inexplicable absence of the LSU defeat, coupled with his time as headset holder against Florida, can not please a second-ranked player nationwide in the 2018 promotion.
