Josh Allen may have opened the Buffalo Bills training camp as No. 3 quarterback, but he will have every chance of winning the starting position.
To this end, the bills already give recruits with the first team unit. It took two good practices for Allen to take pictures with the starters on Friday.
Coach Sean McDermott confirmed to reporters Saturday that three quarters – Allen, AJ McCarron and Nathan Peterman – will rotate regularly with the first team unit in the future predictable.
Allen already siphoning the first team representatives is a positive sign for a QB of many scouts who would need time before being ready to start, with questions regarding his footwork, the decision making and precision. While these problems remain, there is little doubt that the rookie has a huge talent advantage over McCarron and Peterman.
Coaches are constantly questioning the value of each representative, especially for the shifts of learning a system. If we accept these comments as significant, then that Allen has already won representatives of the first team, it is the first step of the rookie who wins the post after the training camp.
It will be interesting to see how the Bills will rotate their quarterbacks once pre-season games start on August 9 (vs. Carolina). If Allen continues his progression upwards, it will be difficult for coaches to ignore the hype and align their most talented QB to open the season.
If Allen clearly overtakes McCarron and Peterman, McDermott will have an interesting decision about throwing his rookie into the fire with little reception weapons at his disposal, behind a redone offensive line that has lost three key players.
For now, Allen will just take a few representatives of the first team here and there until he has handed the reins.
