Division III Fitchburg State guard Kewan Platt was suspended indefinitely on Wednesday following his flagrant elbow thrown to the face of Nichols’ Nate Tenaglia.

The video of the incident quickly went viral and shocked basketball fans. The contact was so uncalled for that many were wondering what had prompted the foul from Platt.

On Thursday, Platt offered his apology for the ugly scene and said that he lost control of his emotions. He wrote in a private Instagram post via MbadLive.com:

“I hereby want to apologize and show my deep regret upon my actions that occurred during the game against Nichols College the other night. What I did is totally unacceptable and not justified in any way. I got frustrated and lost control over my behavior. I know these words cannot undo my wrongdoings. In the future I promise to make better choices.”

Platt had missed a shot in an earlier possession and turned to the official out of frustration. There didn’t appear to be any contact between the two players until Tenaglia made his attempt from 3-point range.

After the incident, MASCAC Commissioner Angela Baumann told For The Win that Platt had been barred from campus in addition to his indefinite suspension. His Player of the Week award was also vacated.

She said:

“The MASCAC and Fitchburg State University take this incident very seriously. We are appalled by the actions of the student-athlete.

“He has been indefinitely suspended from the team and barred from campus. In addition, the case is under review by Fitchburg State for consideration of further sanctions. The MASCAC has also vacated his player of the week award. His behavior goes against the MASCAC’s mission which includes good sportsmanship. On behalf of the MASCAC and Fitchburg State, we apologize to the Nichols College student-athlete, the team and institution.”

According to MbadLive, the university’s police are also investigating the incident.
