It smells like sweat, a new generation of deodorants is coming. The harbading smell that reaches the nose of most muggy days and that comes from the armpits of some individuals has counted hours. Science, indeed, now says stop with the irritating smell.
It is true that giving a smell is not so much sweat per se, which is odorless as the underarm bacteria start to party by metabolizing certain molecules secreted by the skin into odorous compounds, two teams of researchers from the University of York and Oxford then identified in a new study the transport protein that allows bacteria to recognize and swallow sweat
And they thought: what if we made these bacteria the only possible target for a generation of targeted deodorants?
How "sweat works"
Sweat is made up of water and certain types of molecules secreted by the sweat glands. These are distinguished by "eccentric", which are found in the entire body skin and are responsible for practically odorless perspiration due to physical exercise, with which the body maintains the correct temperature; and "apocrine", which are found in the armpits and in the bad area and with water produce complex odorless molecules that can however be badimilated by bacteria that transform them into compounds with a bad smell.
The bacteria in our armpits are actually responsible for the most unpleasant smells. One of them is Staphylococus hominis which swallows the S-Cys-Gly-3M3SH molecule secreted with sweat and converts it into thioalkol 3-methyl-3-sulfanylsan-1 ol (3m3sh), conferring the typical stench
This occurs because a " transport protein " particular in the cell membrane is able to recognize specific compounds and carry them to the inside of the bacteria. Here in the cytoplasm, the transformation is carried out in 3m3sh
The discovery of this mechanism that causes the smell of sweat, according to the authors of the study, can lay the foundation for the development of new types of products that act in a targeted way, at the small number of microorganisms actually responsible for the bad smell
The current deodorants that are on the market already work by killing most of the bacteria that live on the epidermis. The most common ones have not always convinced us, but what do the researchers have in mind will have a better composition? In the meantime, "let's be happy" to make the right choice by buying organic deodorants and with a good Inci or, why not, try a self-made deodorant to fight the bad smells a natural way.
