Punctually with the arrival of summer and mosquitoes, the West Nile virus is back in Europe. This is announced by the European Center for Disease Control (ECDC), which reports the first cases in humans in Greece and Italy, in the province of Rovigo.

Greece, reports the ECDC website, reported four cases one of them confirmed, all in the region of Attica. In Italy, however, the infected person is a 56-year-old man who has been hospitalized. "Most human infections of West Nile are asymptomatic – explains the center – and the majority of clinical cases have mild symptoms of influenza, such as headaches, fever and pain, and in the most severe cases, especially in old people. signs of encephalitis, meningoencephalitis or meningitis ".

In several Italian regions, surveillance by the National Blood Center – Istituto Superiore di Sanità of the presence of West Nile virus in mosquitoes of the genus Culex and in other animals is active. Until then, since the beginning of June, West Nile has been found in twelve provinces of the north-east, in a band that leaves from Ferrara and arrives at Pordenone. Those who stayed in the provinces concerned, remember the center, are suspended donations for 28 days. "In order to ensure self-sufficiency in blood components during the summer – writes the CNS – the use of the Wvn Nat test is recommended as an alternative to the temporary suspension of donors who have pbaded at least one night in the affected areas ".
