Former UCLA basketball player and Sacramento Kings Tyler Honeycutt died following an exchange of gunfire with the Los Angeles police on Friday night.

A family member confirmed to KABC Saturday that Honeycutt was dead.

He responded Friday afternoon to a report of a man with a gun, and at the first meeting, the suspect fired a shot at a residence and officers were retaliated

The department, which did not identify the man, says that he appears to have died from a self-inflicted shot.

No officer was injured in the altercation, according to the LAPD. Several residents of the area had been evacuated as a precaution

Honeycutt, 27, played for the Bruins from 2009 to 2011. He was a second-round pick of the Kings at the 2011 NBA draft and played 24 matches over two seasons before continuing his professional career overseas.

Information from the Associated Press was used in this report.
