MILAN (Reuters) – A group of lawmakers in Italy's ruling coalition have asked the government to ban the Chinese company Huawei Technologies Co Ltd from providing equipment for the deployment of 5G mobile communications in the country, said Friday the newspaper Il Messaggero.

Lawmakers of the Lega party, which runs parallel to the Five-Star Anti-Settlement Movement, plan to appeal to parliament for Rome to use its "golden powers" of industrial veto to block Huawei, already a provider of major telecommunications operators in Italy .

Huawei, the world's largest producer of telecommunications equipment, is being monitored internationally for its relations with the Chinese government. Beijing believes that Beijing could use its technology to spy – which the company has denied.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo warned Thursday that the United States would not be able to associate or share information with countries that are adopting Huawei systems, citing security concerns.
