Thousands of users decided Friday to celebrate their birthday with the President by celebrating Republican rival John McCain. By mid-morning, the #JohnMcCainDay hashtag was one of Twitter's main trends.

It all started with Andy Lassner, executive producer of "The Ellen DeGeneres Show".

"Pay homage to an American hero today," wrote Lassner. "Let's celebrate @ realDonaldTrump's birthday today with the #JohnMcCainDay trend I'm sure it would mean a lot for [a] patriot like Donald Trump. "

Users responded to Lassner's call and the hashtag quickly became viral – he even reached the at the top of the list of trends on Twitter.

Soon, even members of Congress joined the meeting – although it is not clear that they knew how it had started.

Democrat Representative Joyce Beatty tweeted a quote from McCain – "Be brave – the rest is easy", and Rep. Marc Veasey did it too, saying it was "a good day to remember the example from Senator McCain ".

Political pressure groups also joined the group.
