In an apparent response to the launch of the new Taycan electric Porsche, Tesla's CEO tweeted on Thursday: "The S model on the Nurburgring next week".

The Nürburgring Nordschleife is a 13 km long winding race track in Germany, often used by car manufacturers as a test center and where lap times are the de facto reference for the best sports cars in the world.

PORSCHE TAYCAN BEGINS AS THE MOST POWERFUL SEDAN IN THE WORLD

Porsche touted the overall performance of its first 100% electric car, which develops up to 750 hp and sets a record for electric sedans at the Nürburgring circuit at 7.42am. There is only 10 seconds remaining in the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio gasoline.

Tesla has never posted official time on the track, and the fastest private attempt is 8:50, achieved with a Model S P85D now discontinued in 2015. The following year, at a Car and Driver event , the same model could only travel one round of the Virginia International Circuit, 3.3 km long, without switching to reduced consumption mode in order to avoid overheating.

However, the Model S has received several updates since then, and Tesla says the latest top-of-the-line model can accelerate to 60 mph in 2.4 seconds and reach an electronically limited top speed of 163 mph. Porsche's figures for the record-breaking Taycan Turbo S are 2.6 seconds and 161 mph, but the 73 curves of the Nordschleife require much more than straight-line speed.

And yes, Porsche calls it a Turbo. Something that Musk and others have contested. Porsche says it uses the word for high-performance versions and it does not apply to the letter because electric cars do not use turbochargers.
