It’s rich: Trump and Oprah are both excluded from the Forbes 400 list

The latest Forbes 400 list ranking the richest Americans was released on Tuesday – and some familiar faces have been left out of the elite club this year.

The minimum net worth required to be on the 2021 list was $ 2.9 billion, up from the $ 2.1 billion threshold in the previous three years. It brought down 51 billionaires from the Forbes 400 in 2021, including former President Donald Trump and media mogul Oprah Winfrey.

Trump fell off the Forbes 400 for the first time in 25 years, missing $ 400 million with a net worth of $ 2.5 billion. The publication noted that the former president was No. 399 on the list last year, but the COVID-19 pandemic has hit his real estate properties hard in major cities. His fortune has fallen by $ 600 million since the start of the pandemic, which has taken him off the list.

Winfrey first appeared on the list in 1995 with a net worth of $ 340 million. But his current fortune of $ 2.6 billion was still a long way from ranking among the richest 400 Americans. In fact, of the 51 billionaires who weren’t selected this year, 31 are actually richer than they were a year ago, Forbes reports. But they have been repelled by other billionaires who are worth even more.

So who is number 1?

For the fourth consecutive year, Amazon AMZN,
+ 0.98%
Founder Jeff Bezos topped the list of America’s richest people with an estimated net worth of $ 201 billion. Elon Musk of Tesla TSLA,
-0.12%
took second place with $ 190.5 billion, and Facebook’s FB,
+ 2.06%
besieged Mark Zuckerberg takes third place with $ 134.5 billion.

Here are the 10 richest Americans on this year’s Forbes 400 list, along with their net worth and source of wealth.

1. Jeff Bezos – $ 201 billion, Amazon

2. Elon Musk – $ 190.5 billion, Tesla

3. Mark Zuckerberg – $ 134.5 billion, Facebook

4. Bill Gates – $ 134 billion, Microsoft MSFT,
+ 2.00%

5. Larry Page – $ 123 billion, Google GOOGL,
+1.77%

6. Sergey Brin – $ 118.5 billion, Google

7. Larry Ellison – $ 117.3 billion, software

8. Warren Buffet – $ 102 billion, Berkshire Hathaway BRK.B,
+1.61%

9. Steve Ballmer – $ 96.5 billion, Microsoft

10. Michael Bloomberg – $ 70 billion, Bloomberg LP

While many in the United States have struggled financially as the pandemic persisted and cases of the delta variant increased across the country this year, the wealthy nationwide got richer. The collective wealth of the richest 400 Americans has increased 40% in the past year to $ 4.5 trillion, according to Forbes. Meanwhile, the median net worth of a typical American family is $ 121,700.

Forbes used stock prices and exchange rates from September 3, 2021 to calculate the fortunes of the super rich.

With 282 people, about 70% of the list is “self-taught,” meaning they’ve either started a business or helped start one, instead of deriving their wealth from a legacy.

There were 44 newcomers to the list this year. Sam Bankman-Fried, founder and CEO of the FTX cryptocurrency exchange, is the youngest to make the list at 29. He’s also the richest self-taught newcomer in Forbes 400 history, valued at $ 22.5. The oldest billionaire on this year’s list is $ 4.7 billion real estate developer and former Washington Nationals owner Ted Lerner, 95.

The number of women on the Forbes 400 remains unchanged from last year at 56. Women – making up just 14% of the list – are collectively worth $ 564 billion. For the seventh year in a row, Walmart heiress Alice Walton remains America’s richest woman with a net worth of $ 67.9 billion. His fortune has increased by $ 5.6 billion since last year’s ranking thanks to a 13% increase from Walmart WMT,
+ 0.66%
Stock.

And despite donating nearly $ 8.6 billion since 2020, Mackenzie Scott retains the title of America’s second richest woman for the second year in a row. Scott, the ex-wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, is still $ 1.5 billion richer than last year due to the rise in Amazon stock prices.

But while the fortunes of billionaires have grown over the past year, their philanthropy has certainly not increased. The number of Forbes 400 members who have given more than 20% of their fortune has increased from 10 to eight. Those who gave less than 1% of their wealth went from 127 to 156.

Forbes gives its billionaires a philanthropy score of 1 to 5 based on “out the door” giveaways rather than money invested in billionaire foundations. And five of the 10 richest Americans – including Bezos, Musk, Page, Brin and Ellison – received a philanthropy score of just 1, meaning they donated less than 1% of their wealth.

And in terms of dollars donated, Warren Buffet leads the pack. Forbes estimates that more than $ 45 billion of Buffet’s fortune, which now stands at $ 102 billion, has been donated to nonprofits. Hedge fund manager George Soros has ceded the highest percentage of his original fortune, to 64%.
