It’s the little things that matter in a new box office era

Warner Bros. will switch 2021 to simultaneous release of all of its films on HBO Max and in theaters, and during Wonder Woman 1984 was technically the first film to be released under this system, it was released in 2020 and therefore does not count. That makes John Lee Hancock’s go-to thriller The small things the real first movie to be released since Warner Bros. turned his back on the cinema (it digs for our friend Chris), and this weekend was the premiere of the studio’s new era. Then how The small things to do brick and mortar box office? Well.

See, as we’ve said over and over again since about September, nothing does particularly well at the box office these days, unless it’s the Croods sequel and can hang on for a blistering 10 weeks as it’s the only new family movie (or new, since its release 10 weeks ago) to play in most cinemas that have reopened. The small things made $ 4.8million, which was enough to land in # 1 last weekend though it’s not a lot of money, but it’ll be interesting to see if the movie has legs in a box office with other thrillers to compete with (Liam Neeson’s The sniper still stands, and the story suggests that there will be another new Liam Neeson thriller coming out overnight).

Anyway, the rest is all we’ve seen before: The Croods: A New Age added $ 1.8 to its total, bringing it to just under $ 44 million, while Wonder Woman 1984 trailed behind with $ 1.3 million (it sits at $ 39 million). Then there is the Scorer ($ 1.2 million for a total of $ 7 million) and video game adaptation Monster hunter ($ 740,000 for a total of $ 11 million). The only other newbie this week was Supernova, landing in 11th place with just $ 98,670. That $ 4 million doesn’t sound so bad now, does it?
