Before Apple Music, there was iTunes Match. The service downloads your music library from the Music app on your Mac or iTunes for Windows on your PC. Then you can access your music library on all your devices that have Sync Library enabled.
The problem is, although many people have migrated to Apple Music, which can do the same, other users have preferred to pay $ 24.99 per year to continue downloading their own music library with iCloud, but now users report a range of issues with iTunes Match.
As seen in several Apple and Reddit support forums (via MacRumors) users reported that the service has practically ceased to function.
“It appears that Apple broke iTunes Match after the release of Apple Music 3.6. You can upload all of your files to the cloud, but if you upload more, they won’t respond. Looks like it’s been broken for a week now, “ says a Reddit user.
Another Reddit user said, “Upgraded iTunes earlier this week and I’m having the same issue. iTunes keeps “matching your music with songs in the iTunes Store”.
On Apple’s system status page, all of its services are functioning normally, and although users have recently experienced several issues with iCloud, Apple doesn’t seem to think iTunes Match has been affected.
According to some users, this problem started with macOS Big Sur 11.5, although it seems that it is not limited by this version of macOS.
With iTunes Match surviving all these years, even with Apple Music available, it looks like the service might end sooner rather than later.
Although it is more expensive to maintain an Apple Music subscription rather than just iTunes Match, users who subscribe to Match cannot enjoy lossless audio quality or even Dolby Atmos with Spatial Audio.
It’s still unclear if this is a temporary bug or if Apple is truly ending iTunes Match. One thing is for sure, the company is not pushing subscribers to this service, only for Apple Music.
