Jaap van Zweden, musical director of the New York Philharmonic, has announced his intention to step down from his role at the end of the 2023-24 season. The conductor, who has directed the Philharmonie since 2018, shared the news with the orchestra at the end of the rehearsal on Wednesday. “While I love the NY Philharmonic and look forward to continuing as Music Director for the next three seasons, so much has changed because of COVID, including thoughts about my own future, my life. and my family, “he reflects in a note to musicians obtained by Vulture. “I came to the New York Philharmonic as Music Director, excited to work with you and determined to make sure you get the big house you deserve. As you know, the completely transformed David Geffen Hall will now open in the fall of 2022, almost two years ahead of schedule, largely thanks to the support of our board of directors, the leadership of Deborah Borda and at Lincoln Center. In life, I think timing is critical – knowing when to say yes and when to move on is important. With that thought in mind, my inner voice tells me that now is the time to conclude my tenure as Music Director at the end of the 2023-24 season.

The orchestra is currently playing in venues across the city as longtime home David Geffen Hall completes $ 550 million renovations. Van Zweden’s contract was due to expire in 2023, but he was left another year to facilitate the search for a successor, according to Philharmonic President and CEO Deborah Borda. “The pandemic has changed all of our worlds, so I recognize and respect the very personal decision Jaap has made regarding his future,” Borda said in a post. “It is important that he continues to be our partner, working together to reopen our home, the ‘new’ David Geffen Hall. Jaap’s willingness to extend his contract for an additional year (during season 23/24) gives us the time and space to conduct a thoughtful and elegant research process. I know I speak on behalf of the musicians, the board and the staff in expressing our sincere thanks to Jaap. May we all have the confidence to one day give three years’ notice for our work.
