Jack Black is the latest a-lister to join Liongate and director Eli Roth’s adaptation of the hit video game Borderlands. Black will be voicing the role of Claptrap, a constantly sarcastic robot who isn’t quite invested in his teammate’s survival.

The role reunites Black with his The house with a clock in its walls co-star Cate Blanchett and Roth, who directed the 2018 fantasy film that drew 130 million people around the world. He also joins Kevin Hart and Jamie Lee Curtis.

“I’m so excited to find Jack again, this time in the recording booth,” Roth commented. “Claptrap is the funniest character in the game, and Jack is perfect for bringing him to the big screen.”

“We couldn’t have been more in tune with our filmmakers and casting directors as we approach this role,” said Nathan Kahane, president of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group. “It’s one of the biggest obvious casting decisions we’ve ever made. Anyone who’s ever played the game knows that Jack is perfect for this game. We’re excited that he will add his comedic energy and endless voice to our film – he will bring so much to the film.

Two-time Emmy-winning screenwriter Craig Mazin wrote the final draft of the screenplay. It takes place in the distant future when four “Vault Hunters” travel to the distant planet Pandora to hunt down an alien vault believed to contain cutting edge technology.

Avi Arad and Ari Arad produce through their banner Arad Productions with Erik Feig of Picturestart. Executive Producers are Randy Pitchford, EP of the Borderlands video game franchise and founder of Gearbox Entertainment, and Strauss Zelnick, president and CEO of parent company 2K Take-Two Interactive.

Black recently reprized her role as Shelly Oberon in Sony’s Jumanji: The Next Level, which grossed more than $ 800 million at the global box office. He stars in the next animated film, Apollo 10 1/2: A Space Age Adventure, by writer-director Richard Linklater.

Black is replaced by WME and Sloane, Offer, Weber & Dern
