In the chicken sandwich war, there are established sandwiches, better sandwiches and sandwiches with more chicken. Jack in the Box invested heavily in Column C. While Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen took advantage of its two-week promotion of chicken sandwich and artificial social media quarrels with Chick-Fil-A and Shake Shack, Jack in The Box was preparing its own meal effortlessly on the current flavor of the week in fast food: a chicken sandwich with not one, but four chicken patties.
Customizing a hamburger with several patties is a hallmark of the fast food industry. In-N-Out has his 4×4, Burger King has his Triple Stacker King and even Wendy's has experienced a Baconator Quad. But few, if any, chains have ever done that to a chicken sandwich – with the exception, of course, of Jack in the Box.
The very large chain chicken sandwich, which debuted in 1995 with two patties, was revived for some reason on September 2nd with the option of four chicken patties. For what it's worth, Jack in the Box claims did not plan the launch in tandem with the Popeye sandwich.
There are some good reasons why putting several fried chicken patties on a sandwich is a bad idea. The chicken sandwiches are breaded and can have sharp edges that benefit from the proximity of mayonnaise and a roll when guests eat there. Fried chicken in sandwiches also tends to be salty and dry. Having several patties only amplifies these qualities, turning the mouth into an instant desert after a mouthful. Finally, chicken sandwiches also tend to be thicker than fast food patties, which means that managing four patties is simply difficult to handle. In view of the above, most channels seem to have focused on improving the recipe and quality of the chicken instead of just giving more to the customers.
No Jack in the box, though. The really big chicken sandwich includes a hamburger bun with lettuce, tomato slices, mayonnaise, bacon and slices of "swiss cheese" spread between two or four breaded chicken patties. Each piece of poultry looks like the type of chicken patty that could be found on a school lunch tray. Breadcrumbs and height, on the other hand, give the chicken the appearance of four onion rings stacked in a burger bun – an interesting alternative to this footnote on the madness of chicken sandwiches .
Although he has been away for three days, Jack in the Box's "more is better" approach does not seem to be receiving the same hype as his counterpart Popeyes. Maybe Jack should just stick to making great fast food tacos.
