Last week, disturbing events unfolded in the United States Capitol building, as a violent mob besieged the building during the joint session of Congress that aimed to certify the election results of President-elect Joe Biden as the next President of the United States. Thanks to the brave photojournalists and participants’ social media posts, countless images and videos of those who stormed the building have circulated online. Among those photos were revelations that many of them were wearing shirts or wearing badges invoking Marvel Comics characters. Not only was The Punisher featured, which prompted writer Garth Ennis to call those who wore his skull “idiots,” but some wore symbols of Captain America.
People wearing this character’s symbols and art haven’t gone unnoticed, with the children of the character’s co-creator posting a scathing statement about it. Neal Kirby, son of Jack Kirby, released a “statement to the insurgents” which was posted online this evening by CNN presenter Jake Tapper.
