Jack Nicklaus refuses to talk about President Trump, how to ‘accept defeat’

AUGUSTA, Georgia – Jack Nicklaus thinks the Masters is no place for politics.

The six-time Masters champion opened the Masters on Thursday morning with a ceremonial tee shot alongside fellow legend Gary Player. Then he and Player spoke for nearly an hour on topics ranging from fitness and Augusta’s story to Player’s attempts to help integrate his native South Africa.

But one subject was off limits for Nicklaus: President Trump.

Nicklaus recently endorsed the president in a social media post less than a week before the election, saying: “He kept his promises. It worked for the average person. In my opinion, he was more diverse than any president I’ve seen and tried to help people from all walks of life – in the same way.

Election results to date have clearly named Joe Biden as the winner of the 2020 election, although Trump has yet to officially concede. Trump and his allies claim that voter fraud skewed these results, although election officials from all 50 states said there were no irregularities that would have affected the election result.

Nicklaus knows a thing or two about getting close and not being successful; he’s finished second in the majors a record 19 times. Asked specifically whether he had any advice for Trump on how to “come to terms with defeat,” Nicklaus dismissed the question.

“I think I’ve said enough,” Nicklaus replied. “I don’t think this is a place for politics.”

The Masters continues until Sunday.
