Soul singer Jackie Shane has died, according to her label Numero Group. The pioneer of transgender has just been named best historical album for its box set Any other way at 2019 Grammys. The singer died in her sleep earlier this week. She was 78 years old.

She moved to Toronto where she played in clubs and became a cultural icon in a way. She became the origin of Toronto's R & B sound and was courted by leading labels (she turned down contracts with Motown and Atlantic). In 1971, Shane left the music business and spent decades in semi-isolation. She is commemorated on a huge 20-story musical fresco in Toronto with other influential musicians, including Muddy Waters, B.B. King, Ronnie Hawkins and Gordon Lightfoot.
