Deion Sanders has gone by many names during his NFL Hall of Fame career, but now he just wants to call himself “Coach.”
Sanders, who is entering his second season as Jackson State head coach, made it clear on the Southwestern Athletic Conference media day on Tuesday after he was called “Deion” by a reporter for the second time.
“You don’t call [Alabama’s] Nick Saban, ‘Nick.’ Don’t call me Deion, ”Sanders told a reporter from the Clarion Ledger, referring to the seven-time national champion head coach.
Sanders asserted that “if you call Nick [Saban], Nick, you’re going to get yelled at on the spot, “adding,” so don’t do this to me. Treat me like Nick. “
Sanders later tweeted on Tuesday that he “never left the media day”.
The moment occurred after the filmed portion of the event ended and media availability ended. The reporter who called Sanders by first name, Nick Suss, told the Clarion Ledger that “when I interview people I call them by their first name. The newspaper said Suss is the organization’s Ole Miss writer and covered Sanders to SWAC media the day before.
Sanders, who called himself “Neon Deion” and “Prime Time” when he was playing, uses “Coach Prime” as his Twitter handle.
He went 4-3 in his first season with the Tigers, a campaign that was pushed back to last spring due to the coronavirus pandemic. Jackson State opens this season Sept. 5 against Florida A&M on ESPN2.
