JACKSONVILLE, Fla – The Jaguars face quarterback Mike Glennon on Sunday against the Cleveland Browns, giving the NFL companion his first start in more than three years.
Coach Doug Marrone made the announcement on Wednesday, three days after considering benching rookie Jake Luton in a 27-3 loss to the undefeated Pittsburgh Steelers. Luton completed 16 of 37 passes for 151 yards and threw four interceptions against the Steelers.
Luton went winless in three starts for Jacksonville (1-9), who have lost nine in a row. The skid ties in the longest single-season losing streak in franchise history.
Luton replaced Gardner Minshew (inch) during the team’s week off and completed 54.5% of his passes for 624 yards, with two touchdowns and six interceptions. He has also been sacked seven times. His inexperience showed in all three games, first in close losses to Houston and Green Bay, and then as he battled the Steelers blitz.
Minshew picked up the pitch last week, but Marrone couldn’t see enough to believe he’s ready to return.
Glennon, 30, started 22 of 29 games he played in seven NFL seasons with the Raiders, Arizona, Chicago and Tampa Bay. He has 36 touchdown passes and 20 interceptions.
The Buccaneers drafted him in the third round in 2013. He earned $ 18.5 million in his lone season with the Bears, making his last start in Week 4 in 2017.
Glennon was then benched for Mitchell Trubisky of Chicago, who was benched for Nick Foles, who was benched at Jacksonville for Minshew, who was replaced by Luton, who is now benched in favor of Glennon.
