JACKSONVILLE, Fla.UPDATE, 24/05/19, 22h: The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office identified the man who was allegedly killed while he was trying to get into a Westside home on Friday afternoon.

Demetrile Davis, 37, was shot and killed by a man who broke into his home at 7600 block of Pilgrims Trace Drive.

TREND:

The victim told police he heard someone knocking loudly on his door while ringing the door about 15 times. As he headed for the front door, he heard someone at the door of the screen behind his porch, JSO said. He said he saw a man wearing a hoodie.

He then told the police that he went to his room to retrieve his firearm and then went to the lobby. He said that he was starting to call 911 when the front door of his house was opened and that he heard someone enter the house, JSO said. When he peeked around the corner, he was face to face with Davis and shot him repeatedly for fear, police said.

Davis then left the house while the victim continued to call 911. When the police arrived, they found Christopher Mangham, 18, trying to revive Davis. Davis, who also wore surgical rubber gloves, was declared dead by relief.

Police said Davis had several arrests out of the state for breaking and entering and burglary.

Mangham was arrested for murder and burglary. JSO stated that he had already been arrested in Duval County from July 2017 for car theft.

A man died after allegedly trying to get into someone's home.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said it had started with a call to 911 from someone claiming that he had killed an intruder.

A house at the intersection of North Dover Cliff Drive and Pilgrims Trace Drive became a crime scene Friday afternoon.

"We do not see cops without ambulances or truck drivers. It was like a shock, said neighbor Ashley Robinson.

It was just around 12:40 pm when the 911 call came in.

Robinson said he saw the house that the police had identified.

"Right behind us, the house where I drove, and you could see where the door was kicked," Robinson said.

Homicide Sgt. Steve Rudlaff said that the first officers arrived about 10 minutes after the 911 call and found a grounded man injured by at least one bullet.

The man, whose JSO was about 30 to 40 years old, died on the roadway.

"We believe that there was an attempt at an active criminal act when he was shot," Rudlaff said.

Moments later, two visibly angry women stopped and seemed to say that the person who had been killed was a member of their family. Two detectives spoke to them before they left.

JSO stated that it did not know that the people involved in this case knew each other, but that the investigation is still ongoing.
