The Mets started a series of decisive games on Friday night in the same way that ended their fight against the Rockies: defeats.
There was a lot of talk and little action, like that provided by the Mets bats in the 5-1 loss to the Rockies at Citi Field.
Jacob deGrom pitched six rounds of two-handed baseball and took out ten, but his attack and his pen could not hold their share of the bargain. After consecutive victories, the Mets (30-33) began a series of 28 consecutive games against teams with records above .500 with a groan.
"The goal is to win baseball games and when we do not do it, everyone is frustrated," deGrom said. "There is still a lot of baseball and we hope we can start putting them on [wins] together where he is five or six and go from there. But it's a bit [been] move forward, back.
The spirits flared in the eighth inning, when Drew Gagnon came in with a 2-1 deficit and conceded two home runs that earned him a 5-1 record before hitting Ian Desmond on the back with a ball fast 2-1. "Full injury," said Gagnon. "I see where they come from, but I did not go on strike all day."
Players and coaches crowded around the battlefield and the Rockies returned to their dugout before going out for a second round of lyrics. No fist was thrown.
The same could be said for the Mets offensive, which scored only four hits against Antonio Senzatela, the starter of the Rockies, who scored a time of 5.33. Michael Conforto's solo attack in the sixth inning was the only blip on the radar.
"The story was that we did not score points for [deGrom]Said Director Mickey Callaway.
Making his first start since reluctantly leaving with a hip cramp in the seventh in Arizona on Saturday, DeGrom needed 112 shots to finish all six of his heats, but he gave a good chance of winning. He only allowed two runs on six hits and a stroll while recording his third double digit tie.
"He was excellent," Callaway said. "Fastball was electric. He left some sliders and they hit hard, but other than that, it was electric.
Wilson Ramos caught deGrom for the first time in four games, after Tomas Nido managed the last three. DeGrom had an ERA of 1.17 in six starts taken by Nido, and lowered his ERA with Ramos by catching up from 5.33 to 4.91.
The Rockies had the double by Raimel Tapia in the third inning and scored 2-0 on three singles by David Dahl, former Met David Murphy and first to fourth. The only other way they frustrated DeGrom was to make sure his points were counted by fouling the pitches.
"I made some mistakes in the middle with brittle shots. Other than that, I felt like decent there, "DeGrom said. "Some couples, I wish I could come back with the runners."
Robert Gsellman canceled the scoring at the seventh goal before Gagnon canceled the Mets chances to return in the eighth, which allowed them to win the big month.
"No one has been frustrated, so I do not think this group of guys really needs to worry about that," Callaway said. "They are focused on the good things, they come to play every day. I did not even realize that this could be a problem. "
