PITTSBURGH – Jacob deGrom won’t pitch in the next few days, which left the Mets with little choice on Sunday but to place him on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to July 15, with tightness in his right forearm . The team did not immediately announce a corresponding roster change.
“I am frustrated,” said deGrom. “I don’t know what else to say.”
This is the second IT stint of the season for deGrom, who said he felt the tension before leaving for the All-Star break but believed the discomfort would ease. He attempted to initiate a paddock session at PNC Park upon his return from break – in preparation for starting Sunday – but quickly ended training when the tension persisted.
DeGrom, who leads the big leagues with a 1.08 ERA, last pitched on July 7.
The right-hander has suffered from various illnesses this season that have forced him to skip or miss starts, but said he believes none of them are related and the previous injuries have all occurred in swinging the bat. The list of previous conditions includes lat and lateral discomfort, flexor tendonitis, and shoulder discomfort. DeGrom underwent MRI scans throughout which showed no structural damage.
DeGrom said he alerted pitching coach Jeremy Hefner before and during the all-star break about the seal, but believed he would feel better when he returned.
DeGrom joins a group of starting IL Mets pitchers that includes Noah Syndergaard, Carlos Carrasco, David Peterson and Joey Lucchesi. Already gasping for air, the Mets will have to fill the starting rotation openings Monday and Tuesday in Cincinnati. Jerad Eickhoff is a candidate to start one of these games.
