The San Francisco 49ers officially announced the signing of running back Jacques Patrick from the Bengals practice team on Tuesday. The move was first reported Tuesday morning by NFL media’s Tom Pelissero. Cornerback Dee Virgin has also been released from the practice squad.
There was no matching move needed to add Patrick as linebacker Dre Greenlaw was placed on the injured reserve ahead of Sunday’s game and the 49ers didn’t add anyone right away.
With injuries to JaMycal Hasty, Elijah Mitchell and Trey Sermon in Week 2, Patrick gives them the depth of a player who has played preseason this year and trained with an NFL team. This was not the case for Kerryon Johnson who signed with the 49ers training team last week, nor for any of the three veterans they coached on Monday.
Patrick led the Bengals to rush this preseason and spent the entire last year on their practice squad after a five-game stint in the now-defunct XFL. He ran for 254 yards and two touchdowns in 60 carries for the Tampa Bay Vipers. He also scored five receptions for 49 yards.
Virgin has been sacked from the practice squad, leaving a vacancy on the 16-player training roster. The depth of the cornerback is less of a concern for San Francisco with cornerback Emmanuel Moseley expected for the third week. They may also want to open up a spot on the practice squad for an additional running back or linebacker depending on their health in that position.
