Jada Pinkett Smith said she and Sheree Zampino, Will Smith’s ex-wife, had a “brotherhood” but it took a long time to get there.
Pinkett Smith opened up about some of the biggest obstacles of his life on the last episode of “Red Table Talk” on Facebook Watch, released Wednesday. The actress was joined by co-hosts Adrienne Banfield Norris (her mother) and Willow Smith (her daughter) as she answered questions from famous friends in honor of her recent 50th birthday.
“Black Panther” star and longtime friend Angela Bassett asked Pinkett Smith via a video, “What was the hardest thing for you to overcome?”
In response, Pinkett Smith spoke about the difficult but rewarding experience of motherhood. Then she spoke about the evolution of her dynamic with Zampino.
“I would say another challenge was to iron out my thoughts on the relationship with Sheree and me,” said Pinkett Smith. “It was a real process.”
Zampino married Smith in 1992 and they had a son named Trey Smith that year. They separated in 1995 after Zampino filed for divorce from the “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” actor.
Smith married Pinkett Smith in December 1997 and she gave birth to two children, son Jaden Smith (born 1998) and daughter Willow (born 2000).
Since then, the stars have spoken candidly about their blended family, and Pinkett Smith calls Trey her son. She even has a tattoo that symbolizes the three children.
Zampino appeared at the ‘Red Table Talk’ series premiere in 2018, in which she and Pinkett Smith first spoke one-on-one about their blended family. Zampino returned for a holiday episode in November 2020.
“When I think of our relationship now, there is real brotherhood there,” Pinkett Smith said on the last episode of “RTT”. “But it took about 20 years.”
She continued, “It was really a transformation for all of us, to have a blended family and to come to a place where it was easy and to have full and total acceptance. Ree has acceptance for me and all my nonsense. . I have acceptance for her and all her nonsense. There is a very beautiful brotherhood there. “
