Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade allowed Broadway performers to shine on the national stage after COVID-19 closed the Great White Way.
A good thing, right?
Enter “Jagged Little Pill,” the Tony-nominated musical based on songs from Alanis Morissette’s 1995 hit album of the same name.
As the cast members delivered a rendition of Morissette’s “You Learn”, viewers who logged in at home took to social media to watch other people on social media in disbelief. Some experienced a distinct feeling of discomfort. Others growled when they heard voices that were not Morissette’s deliver her famous words.

The song from “Jagged Little Pill” was just one musical number among several prerecorded segments featured in the parade of shows such as “Mean Girls”, “Hamilton” and “Ain’t Too Proud – The Life and Times of the Temptations “.
Due to the pandemic, the parade has removed its usual course of floats and balloons in favor of shows placed in front of Macy’s entrance or the home of individual Broadway shows. The usual crowd of people on the sidelines had also left.
But a lot of people have weighed in on “Jagged Little Pill” at home.
They apparently weren’t swayed by the production’s 15 Tony nominations – most of all shows this year – including Best Musical.
“I think the musical Jagged Little Pill is proof that most things shouldn’t become musical theater,” Bonnie Stiernberg tweeted.
“I love musicals,” Michaela Flack tweeted. “I really appreciate the Canadian legend Alanis (Morissette). But I don’t understand how “Jagged Little Pill: The Musical” was created. These songs were intended only for Alanis and Alanis.
“As a huge Alanis fan, Broadway Jagged little pill is a tough patch,” Naomi Rivas tweeted. “I have the impression that a teenager is embarrassed by my parents.”
Some have compared the appearance of the performance to a pharmaceutical advertisement.
Seeing the deluge of negative comments, fans of the musical came to the show’s defense.
They pointed out, for example, that the song was a small part of the whole and was separate from its usual context on the series.
For those who are not discouraged in their appreciation of the musical, there will be a live-airing “Jagged Little Pill” show on December 13th which will be billed as a “Broadway Reunion Concert”.
The cast will come together after nearly 10 months off the stage to perform selections from the show in support of the #SaveOurStages movement in partnership with performing arts centers and theaters across the country.
