Jaguar Land Rover, one of the largest car manufacturers in the world, announced a shock, confirming the development of embedded software "smart wallet".
The technology will allow drivers to earn cryptocurrency when they share data on issues such as traffic congestion, road hazards, road closures and emergency incidents.
The company said that cryptocurrency could also be earned if the vehicle participates in carpooling.
Smart wallet software testing is currently underway in the UK.
It is understood that the Jaguar F-PACE and Range Rover Velar are the first vehicles to have been equipped with the smart wallet during the test.
IOTA cryptocurrency in the foreground
The technology is developed in partnership with IOTA – the only cryptocurrency that will be used to reward drivers.
IOTA is currently trading at just over 25 US cents.
"Smart portfolio technology can be easily adapted to all new vehicles," said Dominik Schiener, co-founder of IOTA.
Mr Schiener told Reuters that he thought that IOTA was poised to become the cryptocurrency of choice for all car manufacturers.
"IOTA wants to allow interoperability with all these different actors.
"So there is no Jaguar part, no BMW part, but only one universal token for this machine economy."
Jaguar Land Rover employs nearly 50,000 people worldwide and has recorded a turnover of 25.8 billion US dollars last year.
No time has been set aside for a commercial launch of the cryptocurrency software.
