Jaguar Land Rover may soon allow drivers to earn cryptocurrency rewards for sharing their data.
The manufacturer is currently testing the blockchain technology allowing users to allow their cars to automatically transmit road condition data, such as traffic jams, to navigation providers or local authorities, and to receive IOTA chips. The initiative stems from a partnership with the nonprofit IOTA foundation, Jaguar Land Rover said Monday.
Using "smart wallet" technology, cryptocurrency gains can then be used to buy coffee or pay tolls, parking fees, and on-the-go electric charging, the company said. Portfolios can also be reloaded using conventional payment methods.
Jaguar said its cars would be equipped with Internet Object Sensors (IoT) to provide data via IOTA's "Tangle" distributed ledger, including messages. This information would then be transmitted to the municipal authorities concerned. For example, cars could communicate if a tree blocked a road or if a car accident had occurred, while providing more accurate localized weather reports.
The pilot project is led by the automotive giant's software engineering center in Shannon, Ireland, which has already integrated technology into several vehicles, including the Jaguar F-PACE and Range Rover Velar.
The software architect Russell Vickers said:
"In the future, an autonomous car could go to a charging station, recharge and pay, while its owner could choose to participate in the sharing economy – earn rewards by sharing useful data, such as the warning of cars by traffic jams.
In 2017, DOVU, the blockchain start-up supported by Jaguar Land Rover, also planned to launch a blockchain platform to reward users who share mobility data such as location, distance traveled and weather conditions.
