JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jaguars signed Terrelle Pryor on Monday morning, adding another player asking questions to a group of positions with little certainty.
Pryor, who has 115 assists for 1563 yards and seven touchdowns in six seasons, is the second most experienced receiver of the Jaguar formation. Only Marqise Lee, who missed the 2018 season after suffering a knee injury during the pre-season, has more catches (171).
The Jaguars have signed Chris Conley (104 catches) in open competition, and three more are returning from 2018, although two are facing important issues. Third-year Keelan Cole was a major surprise as a rookie not hired in 2017, leading with 748 yards on the receiving court but disappointing in 2018. Cole was benched in October after five falls and two losses and has only got nine catches in the last eight games.
DJ Chark was a second-round pick last season (the Jaguars said he had a first-round score for him), but he had more impact on the special teams than on the receiver. He caught only 14 passes for 174 yards.
Third-year Dede Westbrook became the best receiver and playmaker for the Jaguars last season, scoring 66 passes for 717 yards and five touchdowns. The Jaguars have only scored four touchdowns in the last five games (one was an interception return) and Westbrook had two.
The only other receivers on the roster are untrained rookies Michael Walker, Raphael Leonard, Tire Brady and Dredrick Snelson, and freshman C.J. Board, who has no career.
To make room for Pryor, the Jaguars released defensive lineman Lyndon Johnson.
Pryor, 29, played for the New York Jets and Buffalo Bills last season but was released by both teams after short stays.
The Jets released Pryor on October 20 after being torn a groin muscle. He signed with the Bills 10 days later and said that he had felt "underused" in six games with the Jets to start the season.
However, it only lasted two weeks with Buffalo, collecting two passes for 17 yards. In total, he made 16 receptions for 252 yards and two touchdowns last season.
His best season was 2016, when he captured 77 assists for 1,007 yards and four touchdowns in 16 games for the Cleveland Browns.
He then signed a one-year contract with the Washington Redskins in 2017, rejecting a multi-year Browns bid after his low season. But the move did not work for Pryor, who finished with just 20 catches for 240 yards and one touchdown in nine games. He finally needed an operation at the ankle at the end of the season in November.
In 2011, the Oakland Raiders chose Pryor, who was playing quarterback against Ohio State, in the third round of the extra draft. He started 10 games at quarterback for the Raiders and appeared in five other games over three seasons.
