The Jaguars haven’t made a final decision on coach Doug Marrone’s future, but he is expected to be replaced in the days following Sunday’s final against the Colts – and they should make at least one possible replacement for a big name.
The team has shown interest in former Florida and Ohio State coach Urban Meyer, who has lined up a staff and told those close to him in the football community that he plans to land at Jacksonville, according to sources.
The Jaguars won’t make a firm and final decision on Marrone until after the season, but that’s the expected outcome provided Jacksonville is confident they can find Marrone’s replacement.
Marrone, 56, led the Jaguars to an appearance at the AFC championship game in the 2017 season. The team believe Marrone is a good coach who has done his best with a young team and who is very successful. is publicly committed to letting him finish the season even after sacking general manager Dave Caldwell on November 29. But the Jaguars have now lost 14 straight games, reducing Marrone’s record to 23-42 in five seasons and securing the No. 1 pick in the April Draft.
It is considered likely, but not certain, that Marrone will be sacked at some point following Sunday’s final against the Colts, and Meyer’s pursuit will be a factor.
If Meyer isn’t the eventual choice, or decides to stay in retirement, Jacksonville should take a close look at the offensive side of the ball. Ohio State coach Ryan Day, whose squad is currently set to face Alabama in the NCAA national title game, is also expected to spark interest for the Jaguars.
Meyer has weighed up great job opportunities in the past, with the University of Texas being the most recent. Over the past two years, NFL head coaching jobs have reportedly intrigued him.
However, Meyer hasn’t made a firm commitment to coaching next year at all. Currently he is a college football analyst at Fox Sports and taking any job would take him away from his family, including his grandchildren.
The Jaguars have one of the more attractive openings, with the first pick who could become Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence, several first-round picks, a patient owner, young talent and plenty of cap room.
Meyer previously retired from training due to a myriad of health reasons, including an enlarged congenital arachnoid cyst on his brain which led to aggressive headaches, causing him to fall to his knees during a Buckeyes’ game against Indiana in October 2018. Meyer retired after the season. . He had previously left Florida in 2009 due to stress-related health issues that prompted him to be admitted to hospital with chest pain.
