Many things can change in 15 practice sessions and two pre-season games.
Total unknowns can become emerging stars. Perceived alignment locks can slide to the bubble – or completely out of the team.
Now that the New England Patriots training camp is officially closed and the team is gearing up for the No. 3 preseason game Thursday against the Carolina Panthers, here are 10 winners and seven losers from this that we have seen so far this summer:
WINNERS
Jakobi Meyers, wide receiver
Meyers will not just be part of the team as an unprepared rookie – he has a decent chance to start Week 1. The North Carolina product has been the undisputed star of the training camp and dominated the two pre-season games, totaling 12 out of 14 goals for 151 yards and two touchdowns. No other Patriots player has more than four catches or 45 receiving yards.
Chase Winovich, edge hunter
Speaking of dominant presumptions, Winovich has been the most productive of all NFL hitherto. According to Pro Football Focus, his 12 total pressures (three sacks, a touched QB, eight hurries) are at the top of the rankings. The Patriots will find a way to recruit the long-haired rookie this season.
Joejuan Williams, cornerback
Williams looked a little lost during the first week of the camp. This is certainly not the case anymore. The very large second round selection ended the training camp tied for third with eight pass interruptions in the competitive exercises, allowed two shots on seven goals for 18 yards in two pre-season games, and shut out Corey Davis at of Saturday's victory against the Tennessee Titans
Jake Bailey, bettor
It took a few weeks for Bailey, the president of the federation, to dislodge Ryan Allen and cause the first Patriots betting change since 2013. The Stanford product is a show not to be missed.
Isaiah Wynn, left tackle
After a year of layoff, Wynn finally returned to the game against the Titans. And although he played only 19 shots when he returned from a torn Achilles, the choice of the first round of 2018 seems ready to take over as a left tackle from the Patriots.
Sony Michel, runner
Having a camp (almost) without injury allowed Michel to expand his skills. He now seems much more comfortable in the passing games than in the rookie category, suggesting that the Patriots may not run as hard when he is on the field this season.
Jamie Collins, rusher on board
Few defenders of the Patriots were as disruptive during the camp as Collins, who seems ready to play a major role in his first season in New England.
Jonathan Jones, corner half
That Jones vs. Duke Dawson are fighting for the corner job? Yes, it's over for weeks now. Jones was one of the best players in the camp and did not participate in any of the first two exhibition games, which indicates that the team considers him a pseudo-starter.
Byron Cowart, defensive lineman
Cowart's annihilation of Rodger Saffold and Marcus Mariota's burial was one of the most explosive moments of the Patriots' pre-season, but former high school rookie 1 has shown steady improvement since his arrival in New England this spring. his way into the mailing list as a fifth-round rookie.
Jarrett Stidham, quarterback
Stidham remains the third option behind Tom Brady and Brian Hoyer, but he looked significantly better this summer than any recent Patriots rookie. His second pre-season effort was not as successful as the first, but he still completed 14 of 19 passes for a total of 193 yards and one touchdown and led a 99-yard mark in the fourth quarter.
losers
Dontrelle Inman, wide receiver
Reggie Wayne. Nate Washington. Andrew Hawkins. Eric Decker. Dontrelle Inman.
Duc Dawson, corner half
Bill Belichick has never cut a player a year after having designated him on the first or second round, but Dawson (56th overall in 2018) is likely to become the first. He allowed three passes over 20 yards and three penalties in two pre-season games. He was not so good at training. It's understandable that the Patriots want to keep Dawson after he has not played at all as a rookie, but it's hard to find room for him in their packed house.
Mike Pennel, defensive tackle
Pennel seemed to be the smarter signature of the Patriots' offseason – a simple replacement for the late Malcom Brown. In August, Pennel has to wait for the second half of the preliminary games to see the pitch. It is not summer that we expected from the former New York Jet.
Matt LaCosse, tight butt
LaCosse was scheduled to make his debut at Patriotes Week 1 and, while it might still be, he did not really separate himself from the rest of the team's hopes. He also suffered an injury that marginalized him throughout the Titans week.
Braxton Berrios, wide receiver
Injuries inflicted on several Patriotes receivers – particularly the one who marginalized Julian Edelman until Monday – created many opportunities for Berrios, who met many representatives with Tom Brady during the camp. The fact that he is still on the player list tells you what he did with those chances. Like LaCosse, Berrios was not mean this summer, but he also did not inspire much confidence.
Keionta Davis, defensive end
Davis struggled to unveil his composition in 2018 (13 healthy scratches, including three in the playoffs), and nothing we've seen this summer suggests that this will change this season. His spot is seriously compromised.
Ryan Allen, bettor
Allen is a very good bettor who should find a new team quickly, but Bailey is clearly the winner of their fight.
