James Beard Awards 2019: Semi-finalist Announcement of Restaurants and Chefs



Today, the James Beard Foundation announced its Semi-finalists of restaurants and chefs for 2019. And this year, the list promises to be more diverse than in previous years.

Last October, the James Beard Foundation changed its policies to ensure a more diverse group of decision-makers and winners. For the first time, the composition of its awards committees would reflect the demographic data of the US Census. To this end, new members of the committee are on the expanded 19-member list: culinary writers Khushbu Shah, Joseph Hernandez and Adrian Miller. The foundation has also asked these committee members to increase the diversity of prize judges, a group that includes committee members, industry experts, as well as hundreds of previous James Beard award winners and regional panelists. .

According to the James Beard Foundation, these guidelines allowed the representation of people of color to rise by 8% in the committee and by 14% at the Restaurant & Chef, Book, Broadcast and Journalism judges. Women's representation has increased by 5%. Representatives of the semi-finalists in the categories of restaurants and chefs saw their representation of people of color increase by 7%, although the number of women from last year.

Once the judges and committee members have voted, this "long list" will be reduced to five nominees among the finalists by category, which will be announced Wednesday, March 27 at a press conference in Houston. The James Beard Awards Gala, where the previously announced America's Classics winners will also be announced, is scheduled for Monday, May 6 in Chicago. (Meanwhile, the winners of the media awards will be unveiled on Friday, April 26.)
