James Comey says Trump officials like Barr make "compromises" for surviving the administration

In the article published on Wednesday, Comey wrote that people had asked her what had happened to people like Attorney General William Barr, who, according to Comey, deserved "the benefit of the doubt" before the publication from the report of the special advocate Robert Mueller. The op-ed was released the same day that Barr was questioned at a Senate hearing on his handling of the Mueller report.

"Accomplished people lacking inner strength can not resist the compromises needed to survive Mr. Trump, which makes it something they will never be able to recover from," wrote Comey in The Times. "It takes a character like (former Defense Secretary James) Mattis to avoid the damage, because Mr. Trump gnaws your soul with little bites."

Comey, whom Trump fired very early in his presidency, said that such compromises had begun with officials "remaining silent while he lies (both in public and in private), making you an accomplice to your silence". Comey went on to say that the "circle of private consent" moves to "public displays of loyalty," implicitly referring to a cabinet meeting where department heads praised Trump for a long time.

Comey said staying in the administration required "extra compromises" in which "you use your language, praise your leadership, extol your commitment to values".

"And you are lost, he has devoured your soul," Comey wrote of Trump officials.
