EXCLUSIVE: James Corden is in negotiations to extend his contract for CBS ‘ The late show.
Deadline understands the Briton has been in talks for some time but negotiations have intensified recently. Representatives for CBS and Corden declined to comment.
Corden’s current contract runs until August 2022 and the network is reportedly keen to keep it. While network managers would be pleased with the performance of the linear show, which aired at 12:37 a.m., it was the digital success of the show that greatly increased its value to CBS and CBS Studios, which produced it. The late show has had over 9 billion views on its YouTube page and has 27 million subscribers, the second highest as of late night.
He has also been a powerful IP generator for CBS Studios, giving two spinoff series to date with Carpool Karaoke and Let go of the microphone.

CBS Entertainment President Kelly Kahl told Deadline last week, “We love James and he does and has done a great job. We don’t comment on the state of the negotiations.
Nick Bernstein, SVP of CBS, Late-Night Programming, West Coast also joked about the show’s talks last week after Corden persuaded him to dress up as a jockey and ride an accessory horse. Bernstein, a regular figure on the show since the start of the pandemic, said: “If you don’t sign a new contract after I did it for you, I’m going to be so mad at you.”
Corden first signed a contract with CBS in 2014 and began hosting The late show, replacing Craig Ferguson, in 2015. In August 2019, it was revealed that Corden had signed a new two-year deal that would lead him to next year.
There have been constant discussions about whether Corden will continue into the late night space, with UK tabloid rumors and stories that he wants to leave the US and return to the UK. But Deadline learns Corden is happy in LA and wants to continue hosting the show, as long as terms can be met.
While talks are underway, sources warn that, as with any negotiation, there is still a chance that an agreement cannot be reached.
Corden and his Late show executive producer partner Ben Winston, are also on a roll with their production company Fulwell 73, which is behind projects such as Cinderella and Carpool Karaoke, who landed her last Emmy this weekend.
Winston previously told Deadline that the team is not focusing on the time slot. “We are not at 12:37 am, we start our program at 12:37 am. The way we think about the show is how it’s shared the next day. Our competition is not what happens at 12:30 AM, our competition is everything everyone watches over the next 24 hours on their TV or laptop. The Late Late Show with James Corden won four consecutive Emmy nominations for the Outstanding Variety Talk Series from 2016 to 2020, when a rule change reduced the number of spots in the category.
Produced by CBS Studios and Fulwell 73, The late show returned to the studio in August 2020 and, beyond a handful of episodes filmed remotely since then, mainly during the Covid wave of January 2021, has been there ever since.
