“Guardians of the Galaxy” director James Gunn appears to approve of online bashing of “The Mandalorian” actress Gina Carano after she was fired by Disney for social media posts – despite her dismissal in 2018 from the helm of “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” under similar circumstances.
Viral mob that ran a #FireGinaCarano campaign successfully ousted her from the hit Disney + series on Wednesday after sharing a post on Instagram comparing the current political divide in America to the animosity that led to the persecution of Jews in Nazi Germany.

Lucasfilm, which is owned by Disney, said in a statement obtained by Variety that Carano was “not currently employed by” the company.
Carano fans and advocates took to social media and pointed to various examples of hypocrisy, from a tweet from his “Mandalorian” co-star Pedro Pascal who compared Nazi concentration camps to housing facilities from American migrants to Disney’s current business ties with China, even as the Beijing government imprisons Uyghur Muslims in concentration camps. The studio even thanked officials in Xinjiang province, where the camps are located, in the end credits of “Mulan”.

In the midst of the online battle, a tweet that defended Gunn and hit Carano caught the filmmaker’s attention.
“Oh god, don’t drag @JamesGunn into this unfortunate topic,” entrepreneur Olga Kay wrote before celebrating Carano’s dismissal.
Gunn “liked” this tweet.
In July 2018, tweets resurfaced showing Gunn was joking about rape and child abuse.

“I love when little boys touch me in my silly place,” one tweet read.
“The best thing about being raped is when you’re done being raped and it’s like ‘phew, it feels good not to be raped!'” Gunn wrote in one other.
“The Expendables was so manly I fucked the little boy’s pussy shit next to me! The boys are back in town!” he joked in a 2010 tweet.
Gunn explained at the time that his tweets were attempts at “provocation” and “taboo” and that he had repeatedly expressed regret for them over the years. However, Disney fired Gunn from directing “Guardians” amid the public uproar, although he was later reinstated as the director of the Marvel film in March 2019. The film is currently slated for release in 2023.
