In a recent interview, James Gunn revealed the kind of notes Warner Bros. had given him on the new Suicide Squad movie.
One of the most controversial aspects of recent films in the DC Extended Universe has been the extent of studio interference on projects, so it’s fascinating to hear James Gunn talk about a very different experience with Warner Bros. . regarding notes on his new DCEU film, The Suicide Squad.
In Gunn’s case, the ratings were sparse and none of them had to do with his vision for the film or the level of gore and violence he intended to include in the blockbuster film. “[T]hey were all very happy from the start, ”Gunn told CNA. “Now they gave notes, but it was always, like, you can take the notes if you want, you don’t have to take the notes if you don’t want. And the notes were never about blood or that sort of thing. It was always stories, making sure things were understood. That’s all he ever was. “
Cathy Yan, who directed the last film in theaters of the DCEU, Birds of prey, noted earlier this year, “It was really tough. Dead pigs [Yan’s first film] was such a singular and pure version of myself. And I think when you’re dealing with a budget like [Birds of Prey had] and the kind of pressures a studio has, especially a studio that goes through a lot of change, inevitably you end up having to compromise and fight over stuff. And you win a lot and you lose a lot. It’s just kind of like that. “
And David Ayer, director of the previous one Suicide Squad film in 2016, clashed with Warners over his vision for the film, explaining recently, “I put my life in Suicide Squad. I did something amazing – My cut is [an] complex and emotional journey with “bad people” who are fucked up and rejected (a theme that resonates in my soul). The studio cut is not my movie. Read that again. “
Contrary to Yan and Ayer’s experience, Gunn concluded by describing Warners as “wonderful partners throughout the process.”
