James Gunn, the director of the upcoming film “The Suicide Squad”, recently told the Irish Times that superhero movies have to change or they risk losing their appeal.
Gunn, who has directed several Marvel films in addition to this latest DC film, compared the current state of box office hit comic book adaptations to other genres that were once very popular and ultimately faded out, such as westerns and war movies.
“I don’t know, I think you don’t have to be a genius to put two and two together and see that there is a cycle in these kinds of films, you know and that the only hope for the future of comics and superhero movies is changing them, ”the director told The Irish Times.
He added, “They’re really stupid. And they’re mostly boring to me right now.”
Gunn made it clear that not all superhero movies were boring for him and that he “liked them at first,” praising the visual effects of the first Superman movies he saw as a kid and the first “Iron” movie. Man, ”who started the MCU.

“But if the movies don’t change, it’s going to get really, really boring,” Gunn said.
Gunn is no stranger to changing the formula for the superhero genre. The first two “Guardians of the Galaxy” films, directed by Gunn, brought comedy and vivid color to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the success of this franchise helped transform the Marvel formula. Even on the DC side, Gunn also announced a change in that formula, summing up “The Suicide Squad” to Entertainment Weekly as a “war movie with villains.”

The director of “The Suicide Squad” also told the Irish Times that he drew inspiration from the creators of “Watchmen” artist Dave Gibbons and writer Alan Moore, praising their flawed portrayals of superheroes.
“The costumes didn’t fit the superheroes perfectly and they had a bit of a belly,” Gunn said. “They weren’t all perfect bodies; they weren’t all beautiful. When they fought, they kind of got involved in Bartleby’s stupid thing about fighting in bars.
He continued, “There are people out there who try to do different things with superheroes. So it’s not a 100% rule that not everyone is, but a lot of superhero movies. -heroes are boring. And so for me, I think it’s just about doing other stuff. “
From Gunn’s perspective, superhero shows like HBO’s “Watchmen” and Amazon Prime’s “The Boys” have been praised by critics for introducing political elements into their superhero stories.
