It was a great year for James Gunn.

The writer and director of the extremely successful films of Guardians of the Galaxy saw his employers at Disney send him back mid-last year for offensive joke tweets that have resurfaced for a decade.

While the actors threatened not to return if his full script for the third movie in the series was not used, Gunn moved on to other projects, namely The suicide brigade. But in the midst of the shock and possible upheaval of his career, the only feeling Gunn was hooked on was his fault.

Then, less than a year after his dismissal, he was reinstated. Sending to Deadline, Gunn detailed what he had learned from this experience and why it was so important for him to return to the world of Guardians of the Galaxy.

"I do not blame anyone," Gunn said of the controversial tweets. "I've been feeling bad for a while with some of my ways of speaking in public, some of the jokes I've made, some of the targets of my humor, just the unintended consequences of not being more compassionate in my words The.

"Disney was totally entitled to fire me."

By the time he had discovered that he had been fired, Gunn said, "It was as if my career was over."

Gunn describes the love that he felt from the cast in the fallout. "Chris Pratt calls me and panics, Zoe Saldana and Karen Gillan, all calling and crying, Sylvester Stallone FaceTime me, and of course, Dave Bautista, who came out so loud.

"The amount of love I felt from friends, family, and community members was absolutely overwhelming."

In particular, Gunn attributes the importance of his return to Guardians 3 at the end of the Rocket the racoon's character arc. "Rocket, it's me, it's really, even if it sounds narcissistic." Groot is like my dog, "I love Groot in a completely different way.

"I'm connected to Rocket and I feel compassion for Rocket, but I also feel that his story is not over.He has a bow that started in the first film, continued in the second and crosses Infinity War and Endgame, was ready to really finish this arc in Guardians 3. "
