A lawyer representing Britney Spears’ father spoke out on Thursday to deny claims he was controlling the pop star.

For eight years, the 39-year-old has been under the legal guardianship of Patriarch Jamie Spears. The 68-year-old is in charge of her affairs and personal decisions.

“I understand that every story needs a villain, but people are so wrong here,” Jamie’s attorney Vivian Thoreen said during her appearance on “Good Morning America”.

“This is the story of a very loving, dedicated and loyal father who saved his daughter from a potentially fatal situation,” she explained. “People were harming and exploiting him. Jamie saved Britney’s life.”

According to Thoreen, when Jamie took over his famous daughter’s finances, she only had $ 2.8 million in the bank, despite making tens of millions every year for more than a decade. Thoreen shared that with Jamie’s guidance, Spears’ income has since grown and she now has deemed assets of $ 60 million.

Spears has released several albums, held a successful residency in Las Vegas, and worked as a judge on “America’s Got Talent”.

“Britney’s assets were clearly mismanaged,” Thoreen told the outlet. “Some of those around her were taking advantage of her.

“He collaborated with her,” she shared. “When she’s ready to play, she plays. When she wants to record an album, she records an album and when she wants to live her life like a normal person, he collaborated with her on that.”

During her appearance, Thoreen unveiled previously unreleased videos of the couple in Louisiana taken in early 2020. She said the duo had “crouched” with the rest of the family amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

“Throughout 2020 Britney and her dad have had a lot of conversations,” Thoreen said. “When the pandemic started, they spent two weeks with other family members in Louisiana. Britney and Jamie drove long distances… they played in the family garden. Every evening, Jamie would cook southern comfort food. At that time, Britney never voiced them. words to his father. She never asked him to withdraw. “

“Jamie loves his daughter,” Thoreen continued. “Like any other family problems do arise, but that in no way takes them away from the love and support they have for each other. Britney knows her daddy loves her and she can call on him, guardianship or not.

“Jamie serves as his curator because he loves her. He wants the best for Britney. We have to remember how the Trusteeship was started. Britney needed help and that’s why it was put in place. “

Legal guardianship has been in place since the public collapse of Spears over a decade ago. He gave the Tories – Jamie for most of his existence – control of the star’s estate, including his fortune.

The long-standing legal situation has sparked calls from fans to release Spears from tutelage via the #FreeBritney campaign, which saw its flames fueled by the recent release of the unauthorized documentary “Framing Britney Spears,” which reviewed his life and career, including his legal woes.

Last summer, it was reported that Spears was “strongly opposed” to his father resuming his duties as sole Tory. It is believed that Spears may seek termination of guardianship in the future.
