When the original Everything in the family / Jefferson Designer Norman Lear was told that his classic television series "would not work today": it was all the motivation he needed to prove the public's wrongdoing. Now, according to Deadline, a cast of stars starring at the Oscars is about to brighten prime time for a special live TV show from one night reviving the classics of the '70s.

All in the family has been a beacon of political and social conversations in American homes for nearly a decade during a crucial period for race relations. From 1971 to 1979, the series followed Archie Bunker (portrayed by Carroll O'Connor), an adorable but bold, fanatical and conservative working-class husband. He is a veteran of the Second World War and a nonsense, male toxic, homophobic, meat eater, sportsman, man. There are no safe spaces, no emotional assistance animals, politically correct, and no apologies (consenting) in the Bunker Household. The same is true for Archie and his super-liberal stepchildren and daughter, while his wife Edith (Jean Stapleton) tries to keep the peace by softening her husband's heart and defending current issues like women's rights and racism.

The success of All in the family leads to a sitcom spin off The Jefferson, which lasted from 1975 to 1985. The Jefferson followed George and Louise Jefferson, a married black couple who lived next to the Bunkers. As George and Weezie headed east for wealth and success, the show began a new conversation about the upward mobility of black Americans, a conversation that will later be deepened with family sitcoms such as The Cosby Show. With the scathing and brutal truths of George Jefferson set out, the show highlighted the impression of living as a black man in the world of work of a white man. Especially The Jefferson was the first television series to feature an interracial couple (starring Roxie Roker and Franklin Cover) and became one of the oldest African-American television shows.

According to the deadline:

Woody Harrelson will play Archie Bunker, with Marisa Tomei as Edith's wife in the recess of All In The Family. Jamie Foxx and Wanda Sykes play the roles of George and Louise Jefferson in the All in the Family spin-off series, The Jeffersons.

Ellie Kemper will play Gloria Stivic, Will Ferrell will appear as Tom Willis and Justina Machado will be Florence Johnston. Other casting announcements will be announced.

An original episode of each original series will be recreated with James Burrows as director for both episodes. Lear and Jimmy Kimmel will host the live event, with Brent Miler, Adam McKay, Justin Theroux and Will Ferrell as executive producers.

"The fact that a group of Oscar winners enthusiastically accepted to play these iconic characters bears witness to the greatness of these shows and their creator, Norman Lear," said Jimmy Kimmel, calling the project of "dream come true".

Live in front of a studio audience: Norman Lear's "All In The Family" and "The Jeffersons" will air on Wednesday, May 22 from 8 pm to 9:30 pm (ET).
