January security patch update on Google Pixel, live OTAs

Google today released the first software update of 2021 for the Pixel 3, Pixel 3a, Pixel 4, Pixel 4a, Pixel 4a (5G), and Pixel 5. The January security patch follows on from the sharp drop in the Pixel’s functionality last month.

As a reminder, the Pixel 2 no longer receives monthly updates following a last patch in December.

There are 22 issues fixed in the January security patch of 2021-01-01 and 19 for 2021-01-05. The vulnerabilities range from high to critical, with the most severe being related to the multimedia framework, and a remote attacker can potentially execute arbitrary code through a specially crafted file.

In the last year of Android Security and Privacy Review, Google notes that “no critical security vulnerabilities affecting the Android platform have been publicly disclosed with no security updates or mitigation available. for Android devices.
