This allows other passengers to know that a child may be sitting there.

The website however states that there are several situations in which the icon of the child may not show up. If a ticket is purchased via another website or is part of a tour or rewards program, the icon may not display. Likewise, if the aircraft is changed before the flight, the icons "may not display correctly".
