Although the COVID-19 pandemic still rages around the world and there are many rumors to the contrary, Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga has once again insisted his country is committed to hosting the Olympics this summer. in Tokyo.

Suga, while speaking from a distance at the World Economic Forum on Friday, said the Games would be held in July.

“We are hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games this summer,” Suga said, via The Associated Press. “I am determined to make the Games a proof of human victory against the pandemic, a symbol of global solidarity and to give hope and courage around the world.”

Suga: ‘We must learn the lessons from this pandemic’

The Olympics have already been postponed from last summer due to the coronavirus pandemic and are expected to begin in July.

These games have apparently been constantly questioned, and it is still unclear how they will progress specifically. Games could end up playing out completely without fans, in an NBA-like bubble, and more.

Reports earlier this month suggested the games could be canceled altogether, both due to a recent spike in cases in Japan and an overwhelming majority of Japanese citizens who don’t think the Olympics should be there. take place this summer.

Although the International Olympic Committee has strongly denied this information, a Florida lawmaker has even pressured the IOC to move the games to his state – which is not possible for a number of reasons.

While there is still a lot to be known before July, Suga’s goal is to host a “safe and secure” Olympics – and knows that bringing the coronavirus in Japan under control is the first step. He also pledged to expand their contribution of $ 130 million to help developing countries get vaccinated and called for a broad survey by the World Health Organization.

“We must learn the lessons of this pandemic and prepare for future crises,” Suga said, via The Associated Press. “[To do so], a WHO scientific inquiry must be firmly carried out in a transparent manner. “
