The Rams made their way to the divisional round before retreating in a two-point loss to the Packers on Saturday, setting Los Angeles up for an interesting offseason at the game’s most important position.
Jared Goff managed to come back from thumb surgery in time to step into the game in an emergency and help the Rams secure a wildcard win over Seattle in which his defense was the biggest winner. But Goff was unable to keep the Rams in an offensive showdown with the Packers, who walked away with a 32-18 win. Goff finished the season with adequate work, posting a final passing line of 3,952 passing yards, 20 touchdowns, 13 interceptions, a completion percentage of 67 and a rating of 90 passers.
Goff was as efficient as he was inconsistent, showing a tendency to start games that the Rams ended up winning on a hot streak, and also starting other competitions with struggles typical of his worst days in the NFL. The Rams just didn’t know which Goff they would consistently get, leaving the door open for McVay to take a close look at his team’s future in all positions – including center.
McVay told reporters on Saturday Goff was “the quarterback right now” which wasn’t exactly the most resounding support, and then on Sunday he wouldn’t implicitly indicate Goff is the QB going forward. in THE NFL Network. Steve Wyche reported on Monday that there was more than just inconsistent performance at stake with the quarterback situation for the Rams.

McVay’s vague responses the day after Saturday seemed to indicate that there was an underlying uncertainty about Goff’s position that went beyond his inconsistent play. He thanked Goff for his return efforts to help the Rams win a playoff game, but noted that he needs to meet with Goff to develop a common understanding ahead of a major offseason.
