Jared Goff to start for Rams vs Packers, John Wolford ruled out

Quarterback Jared Goff will start his first game since Week 16 on Saturday when the Los Angeles Rams face the Green Bay Packers in the NFC playoff division round.

Head coach Sean McVay made the announcement Thursday and also announced that quarterback John Wolford will be inactive.

Goff hasn’t started the Rams’ last two games after receiving thumb surgery on his pitching hand. Wolford, his replacement, started in his place in Week 17 and against the Seattle Seahawks in a wildcard weekend. Goff was not supposed to take the field against the Seahawks, but was put on duty when Wolford injured his neck from a Jamal Adams hit.

Wolford was rushed to hospital in an ambulance as a precaution, but was quickly released and was able to celebrate with his teammates after the Rams’ victory. He hasn’t trained all week, but McVay has said he will travel with the team.

Goff, who had three pins inserted in his thumb during the operation, completed nine of 19 passes for 155 yards against the Seahawks. His precision wasn’t quite there, which you would expect from a man who had thumb surgery a few weeks ago, but he avoided making major mistakes. He’ll be one more week out of surgery when he’s on the pitch on Saturday, but no one knows how his thumb will react in the freezing cold of Green Bay.
