EXCLUSIVE: Even though the Sundance deals appear to be heating up, it looks like 2021 has its first major sale on the horizon. While a deal is yet to be struck, we hear MGM is in exclusive negotiations for the supernatural thriller. Adrift with Jared Leto attached to the star and Darren Aronofsky on board to direct. Jason Blum will produce. Sources say that once the package hit the market earlier in the week, MGM was extremely aggressive and quickly took pole position to land the package. Details behind the funding were not available as the deal was not formally concluded.
Blum will produce via its Blumhouse Productions with Leto and Emma Ludbrook via their production company Paradox, as will Carla Hacken via its Paper Pictures banner.

The film is based on a short story by Koji Suzuki, who wrote The ring. Aronofsky and Luke Dawson will co-write the screenplay. Insiders close to the package say Leto identified the project and that he and Ludbrook sued the rights for 10 years before bringing it to Blum and Aronofsky.
The story takes place in the dead calm of the open sea, where a fishing boat discovers an abandoned yacht with a strange distress call. A sailor agrees to take sole control of it while it is towed to port, but he soon discovers why the rest of his more experienced crew call it a “ghost ship.”
No production start date has been set because a script has yet to be written and the schedule has to be worked out. Aronofsky targets the A24s The whale as his next project, which he will tour with Brendan Fraser in March, while Leto a Ridley Scott’s Gucci follow-up to the Apple TV + series We crashed, that the network has just taken over for a series this morning.
Leto has The Little things for Warner Bros. with Denzel Washington and Rami Malek. This movie hits theaters and on HBO Max on Friday. He is also developing a handful of projects, including a sequel to Tron legacy, who tied him to the star and Garth Davis on board to direct. It can also be seen in the next Spider Man spin off Morbius.
Leto is replaced by WME and Aronofsky is replaced by CAA. Suzuki news is picked up by Kadokawa.
