The Oscar-winning actor collaborated with 92 film crews to capture footage across the country on July 4 as part of "A Day in the Life of America".
When Jared Leto was young, he was fascinated by the National Geographic book series A day in the life of America, for which photographers would capture subjects across the country during a day. After determining that the concept could produce a good documentary, Leto presented this film as a first film. A day in the life of America, at the Tribeca International Film Festival on Saturday afternoon.
"It's just with me all these years and I just thought it was an important moment to turn the camera on ourselves and to really look who we are and our crazy nation," Leto said. The Hollywood Reporter.
Leto worked with 92 film crews across the United States, including Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico, to capture footage on July 4th. All that is seen in the film comes from this day of filming.
"Knowing that you have to do everything within 24 hours, the stakes are high because you want to capture stories that truly reflect our identity," said Leto. THRdescribing the project as "very complex logistics", he added, "we all had ambitious goals for the project, for ourselves and for the way we wanted to film it. It was hard but really very fun. I do not think any of us have slept for a week. "
The impulse to finally start the film came when Leto was working on the album America with his band 30 Seconds to Mars, and he thought this documentary would be a good companion. "I consider it a time capsule, something that you can dig up in 100 years, in 1000 years, and that would give us an idea of who we are, what kind of people we are, how long we live, says Leto THR.
After the screening, Leto answered the audience's questions about the film, explaining why he had so many different points of view and why he was not discouraged by the darkness of the film, which includes images of white supremacists, drug addicts and violent neighborhoods.
"There are a lot of things in the movie that I personally do not agree with, but again, I thought it was very important not to censor who we are, who are our neighbors, who is America and give an accurate picture of the nation. in this very tumultuous and important period, "said Leto.
However, despite the darkness, Leto said that he always thought that there was room for hope: "What is so important about America? and from the American dream, it is that we instilled in us that idea that with hard work, with passion, neighbors, that everything is possible, "said Leto." And I still have took it personally in the movie, but it's a hard world for many people in this country and I think that's what we're seeing, but I did not write the script, I'm just the messenger here . "
As for knowing he plans to continue making films, he said THR that it depends on the project.
"I like telling stories and sharing creative work with the world," he said. "It's a very nice thing to be able to do it, it's almost time."
